For many CIS subcontractors, paperwork is often left until the end of the tax year. Receipts go missing, invoices are forgotten and bank statements become the only record of what happened. While this approach may have worked in the past, Making Tax Digital (MTD) is changing how self-employed workers keep their records and report their income to HMRC.
From April 2026, eligible self-employed individuals will need to maintain digital records and submit updates to HMRC every quarter using compatible software. This means accurate bookkeeping throughout the year becomes far more important than trying to piece everything together at tax return time.
Keeping your records up to date has several advantages. You'll have a clearer picture of your income and expenses, making it easier to understand how much tax you may owe. Recording receipts as you receive them also reduces the risk of missing legitimate business expenses that could lower your tax bill.
For CIS subcontractors, it's equally important to record CIS deductions correctly. These deductions are tax already paid on your behalf by contractors and should be included accurately in your records to ensure you receive the correct credit when your tax liability is calculated.
Using digital bookkeeping software also makes life much simpler. Instead of relying on paper receipts or spreadsheets, you can securely store income, expenses and supporting documents in one place. Many modern apps also allow you to photograph receipts with your phone, helping you stay organised while you're on site.
Although Making Tax Digital introduces more frequent reporting, it also encourages better financial habits. Spending just a few minutes each week updating your records is often far less stressful than trying to reconstruct an entire year's finances before the Self Assessment deadline.
Preparing early will make the transition to Making Tax Digital much smoother and give you greater confidence that your records are accurate, your tax position is up to date, and you're ready when the new rules become mandatory.
We're building a simpler way for UK CIS subcontractors to track income, expenses and stay ready for Making Tax Digital.
